Diamond Shreddies

I went to an advertising conference a couple of weeks ago.  The chairman of Oglivy and Mather, a NY public relations firm, presented a case study of the Canadian cereal, Shreddies.  The cereal was taking a nosedive and they needed to figure out some way to boost sales.  At a brainstorming session, an intern turned the square cereal 45 degrees and suggested they re-brand as Diamond Shreddies.  They did and Canadians loved it!  Sales sky rocketed and the intern was offered a job.  Supposedly, it's still used as case studies in marketing programs and it won multiple Clio awards (which, to anyone who doesn't watch Trust Me is like the Oscars for advertising) including Grand Clio for the best campaign.

I personally think the re-branding effort was genuis and it's great to see that there was such a huge consumer reaction to something so simple.  Everyone knew it was the same Shreddie, just turned but the fact that they were marketing it as a new product got customer attention and created a huge buzz.  And really, isn't that what advertising is about??

James Frey

I have fallen in love with James Frey.  He is the controversial author who lied to Oprah about his "memoir" which turned out to be exaggerated.  A friend recommended his book "Bright Shiny Morning" but when I got to the library, they only had A Million Little Pieces and after reading the synopsis, I thought it looked amazing so I got it.  I finished it in 2 days and then got the sequel "My Friend Leonard."  I recently finished "Bright Shiny Morning."  He's an unconventional writer and I found his thought process and stories to be fascinating.  Can't wait to read more from him!!!  Go out NOW and read it!

Approaching Normal

Blue October is a fantastic band. Their most famous songs are "Hate Me," "Into the Ocean," and "Calling You." The lead singer, Justin, has been through hell and back. He has battled with bi-polar disorder, depression, suicidal thoughts and drug abuse for most of his life. Most of his songs in someway or another deal with the unrest that's in his head. He really speaks to anyone who has ever suffered from any type of mental condition.

We saw them several years ago when they released the album "Foiled." I didn't know most of the songs, but I quickly became obsessed with the album after the concert. Last monday, Lauren and I saw them again at the 9:30 club and the concert was almost life altering. They were promoting their new album "Approaching Normal." Each song they sang was so fantastic that I came home and downloaded the album that night. This whole album is amazing....just the words of the songs should be able to speak for themselves...and please don't think I've gone down a steep slide here...it's a heavy album that I completely relate to right now...I recommend you download the entire album, it's that freaking fantastic...
